This compact and highly readable book packs a real punch - it gives deep insight into the world of agribusiness and its opposite, the "seed rebels" who are keeping the diversity of genetic history alive by using seeds suited to the hot and dry climates of the future, from places like Syria and Arizona. The takedown of the chemical-seed industry is well-researched and devastating, and he helps non-expert city-dwellers like me realize how important diversity and resilience is to the future of our food supply. It's as much about the control of our food as it is about the seeds that make it. But it doesn't read as a polemic because it keeps a very human touch with the way it follows the work of real people around the world. It's the kind of book that makes you hope there are a lot of people paying attention who will treat it as a wake-up call, to help out the people already going to great lengths to help all of us, in the face of some appalling behavior by agribusiness. Very highly recommended.
Seeds of Resistance is a must-read for anyone who cares about human survival - in other words, all humans. It takes the reader on a journey through fear, anger, wonder and ultimately hope - around the vital topic of seeds and the future of our food supply. It's a very quick read (first I, then my 91-year old father each read it in an evening). The authors first paint a thorough and frightening picture of the vulnerability of our food supply (particularly in the U.S.) under the corporate control of an extremely small number of giant corporations (e.g., Monsanto and a few others) who began as chemical companies and now own virtually all of the patents on the seeds that supply the bulk of grains and other crops that provide the basis of the bulk of the American diet. The variety of seeds - and thus crop foods - has been narrowing drastically over time, under corporate control. We now have essentially a monoculture for many foods core to the American food system, like corn and wheat, which makes much of our entire food supply vulnerable to being wiped out with a single new virus. These corporations are putting all of us at risk in the name of profit.The book dives into the fascinating world of seed banks - tracing the more than 2,000 year history of humans storing, cultivating and preserving heritage seeds - and thus the sustainability of our food systems. We learn about vast seed libraries - and the heroism of scientists and others who executed daring escapes of such seed libraries to keep them from being destroyed by war or other vulnerabilities such as melting permafrost from climate change.Finally we are given the gift of hope - as we read about the growing resistance of farmers and seed activists around the world who are working to expand the availability of much greater variety of foodcrops, protect them from corporate control, and make them available to small farmers across the U.S. and around the globe. These heroes are protecting us from food disaster and famine and literally seeding the future of humanity.
