I have been involved in high-tech for over 25 years, most of this was software which often included software licensing. I was involved in licensing agreements of and for software. I am not a lawyer but differently learned a few things over the years. One is you really need to be careful with how and what the agreement says. Even a poor agreement can come back to bite you. On page 16 in the book lists common licensing agreements. I was involved in practically every type. If you are new to software agreements or looking for a good refresher, I would highly recommend the book. If you use code or even applications that contain open source code be sure to review chapter 3 on Open Source Licensing. We were getting ready ship a major software project/application when I discovered that one of the developers had included some open source code at the last minute. The developer thought it was OK, but there were potential licensing issues. The software shipment had that feature removed, and engineering had to put together a replacement. The book is only about 49 pages, but well worth the read.
There is so MUCH information on the internet about software licensing, it can become overwhelming to understand which route to take. Even worse, there is so MUCH "misinformation" on the internet. If you read all of the different terms and all of the jargon associated with them, your head will be sore!Mike (the Author) knows all of the ends and outs as that is his job. He clearly lays out all of the different terms in this easy to follow handbook. No need to second guess which route you should take after following his knowledge.Right off the bat, we learned something that could directly impact us when offering "white label rights" to some in-house created software.This is a great read and really clears up all of the different terms and levels of software licensing.We received this as a gift and did not have to pay for it. We are in no way compensated by providing this review.
