From refugee to elite status as an important official during the Nuremberg, this account reads almost like a breathless action story yet is the biography of a man who lived life to its fullest. Sonnenfeldt reminded me of a Jewish Forrest Gump always in the right place at the right time. The difference is that his is a true story. It is also interesting as heck. His insights into the various Nazi officials he interrogated as part of his job flesh out history's verdict of them and their devotion to Hitler's genocide. How he got to that position makes an exciting yarn that could stand on its own. Very few biographies or character sketches are page turners. This one is and it is well worth reading.

This is my favorite book of the recent past. The first section on the Nuremberg trials, the investigation leading up to and the actual trial itself, was fascinating. Then came the surprise, when the second section regressed to the birth of the author and his life growing up in Germany, escaping the Nazis, experiencing incredible circumstances, and finally making his way to America. He then completes the circle by enlisting in the US Army, returns to Germany in time to translate and expose the atrocities. It is an amazing story. Read it straight through in 2 days. It was that compelling.

My father fought in WW11 and was a prisoner of war for 2 1\2 years. All my life I was aware of his service, I was raised in the military. I knew of Hitler and the Nazis, I lived in Berlin Germany when there was still a West and East Berlin. The intimate details of the defendants of the Nuremberg Trials was very enlightening and at time surprising. The life story of the author as a Jew in Germany I enjoyed reading about how he escaped and the adventures that followed. The first 2 chapters are really the only chapters about the trials but the interviews he had and the structure of the cases was very interesting, I do wish there was more content on that but to hear his perspective as a Jew was really very interesting.

One of the most interesting military oriented books I have ever read. German kid immigrates to the U.S. ends up in the army fighting in Germany...winds up as corporal in the motor pool as mechanic in 1945.. ordered to be an interpreter... winds up interviewing some of the major perps of Nazi-ism during Nuremburg trial. His personal recount of his extensive interactions with high level American and German officers is fascinating. Where else have you read about off the record conversations with Herman Goering?

Reading "Witness to Nuremberg" is like having a conversation with the author. Mr. Sonnenfeldt is someone who lived his principles, shared the importance of personal values and the value of democracy with others. It's a full circle story, forced to leave his hometown and yet, years later able to return and contribute to the young people and others. Also, here is a man who made the most of situations, achieved his potential and in spite of unforeseen circumstances, lived fully and contributed to the good of humanity. One to be admired and respected.

Simply amazing story and well-told. I am an interpreter myself and bought the book to learn about his experience as an interpreter. While some of the things he did and said would be considered unethical today, in those days the profession was still in its infancy and he did a fine job and told a great story. The rest of the book was a complete surprise and absolutely amazing. This begs to be made into a movie.

A little different perspective on the Holocaust. The author is an escapee from Germany pre WWII who enlisted and came back with the US Army and then was an interpreter at Nuremberg. The story is about his entire life from pre to post Holocaust to educating succeeding generations about what happened. For me it was more interesting in part because of the individual and personal parts of the story, but also because he refutes the Holocaust deniers with his well documented life story. Very readable narrative.

I always love reading about WWII and the holocaust. This book offered an inspiring look at the accomplishments and contribution of one man to the success of hunting down, interrogating, and the prosecution of those instrumental in wounding and killing millions. I enjoyed witnessing, through his story, how things fell into place so that he became the chief interpreter.
