This beautifully illustrated book takes us on a trip to the mythical octopus's garden deep beneath the sea.Drawn especially for children -- but very cool for adults as well -- Octopus's Garden celebrates the freedom of being a child and being able to live your dreams: "We would be so happy you and me, no one there to tell us what to do."The words and pictures express the joy of discovery and the comfort of being with your friends: "Oh what joy for every girl and boy, knowing they're happy and they're safe."The accompanying CD features Ringo Starr reading the words to young children in a very friendly and reassuring way. There is also an opening message to kids from Ringo, a new recording of the song (no, it's not the Beatles), and an instrumental version for kids to sing along to.The words to the song were inspired by a story that Ringo Starr was told in 1968 while sailing in the Mediterranean. He wrote the simple, playful words after being told by the boat's captain that octopuses travel along the sea bed and pick up shiny objects and stones which they use to build gardens in front of their caves.This children's adventure is nicely illustrated by Ben Cort, a talented British artist with a simple, light touch who visually creates the fantasy land that we first heard about on Abbey Road. All in all, there is great humanity and innocence in this book and CD.Highly Recommended.
But if you're expecting the original version of the song ... it's not. I love Ringo, he's my favorite Beatle. He wrote the book. Unfortunately he reads it like a lot of "actors" read children's books (actually, how a lot of authors READ from their books at ... readings), instead of telling the story. I expected more from Ringo, I guess. Your kid will probably love it. Play the original version and read along. The book is very nice.
Ringo reading along with the book is what makes it a very sweet and dear book. Us as parents, and no grand parents can remember when we first saw Abbey Road in the local record store, this is a great way to start off another generation of Beatles fans. The story is simple to understand, and the drawings are top notch. Great job on this project Ringo, I hope there is another in the works, "Don't pass me by"?
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and of course this is a childhood throw back for me because I grew up with my dad playing me this song, it comes with a cd with the song and a reading by ringo himself of the book. My son , daughter and myself throughly enjoy this ! Also my 3 yo son feels so cool “reading†the book since he knows all the song lyrics it’s like he’s reading it himself !
The illustrations are delightful and capture my 21 month old's attention. He loves to play I spy and find all the little sea animals. He's even picking up the melody of the song! Wish they would put out a whole series of Beatles songs as children books i.e. Penny Lane, Across the Universe, All Together Now, Strawberry Fields, Mother Nature's Son etc come to mind.
Not much story line here, it is literally just the song lyrics written out. But the book is large for reading to a group and the illustrations are fantastic. My son LOVES the Beatles so this was a hit. Read it to a kindergarten classroom and all the children adored this book.
I knew it was used, but wish it stated that it was an old library book! I would have bought a new one. Couldn't get the stickers off and I bought it for my nieces baby shower. Showers tomorrow, so I'll just give it to her at some other time.
This book is Awesome! My 2 year old loved it and also enjoyed the cd. It has become a bedtime favorite and she enjoyed it so much I also bought a copy for a friend as a gift! Such a simple sweet and fun story!
