From the Back Cover
Award-winning designer and stylist Gale Halderman was at the epicenter of the new project, and, in fact, his initial design sketch formed the basis of the new Mustang. In this behind-the-scenes tome, his involvement in the project as well as telling the entire story of the design and development of the Mustang is revealed. The process of taking a car from sketch to clay model to prototype to preproduction and finally finished model is recounted in insightful detail. During the early 1960s, many fascinating experimental cars were created in the lead-up to the launch, such as the Mustang I two-seater, Mustang II proto- type, Mustang Allegro, and Shorty. Eventually the Mustang, based on the existing Ford Falcon, received the nod for final production. In a gala event at the World's Fair in New York, the Mustang was unveiled, receiving public accolades and critical acclaim, and soon it became a runaway hit. After the initial success, Ford designers and Gale Halderman designed and developed the first fastback Mustangs to complement the coupes. The classic Mustang muscle cars to follow, including the GT, Mach 1, and others, are profiled as well. The Mustang changed automotive history and ushered in the pony car era as a nimble, powerful, and elegantly styled sports coupe. But it could so easily have stumbled and wound up on the scrap pile of failed new projects. This is the fascinating and dramatic story of how the Mustang came to life, the demanding design and development process, and, ultimately, the triumph of the iconic American car.

Great inside info on the mustang beginnings
Most interesting book about the design process at FORD in developing the MUSTANG. Dale was a young buck, but he had good work habits which helped moving the design through FORD'S red tape.
great to read (and look at the pictures!) of the design of one of america's coolest cars! now i really want to visit the museum!
O.K., first of all, the fact about the Mustang I that gave me the biggest kick was finding out that the logo was designed by a fellow Hungarian, Charles Keresztes But, the story is really about Gale Halderman, who designed the Mustang, His career with the Ford Motor Company, and the many prominent people there that he worked with. Henry Ford II of course plays prominently in the birth of the Mustang, mostly, because he had to be convinced of the wisdom of producing such an automobile. Which is where Lee Iacocca comes in, the Mustang was his baby and, among a few notable others, Gale Halderman made it happen. Halderman created the iconic design that won "the deuces" heart and his support for the bringing the Mustang to market. The rest is history! The book continues with the story of Halderman's continuing success at Ford and closes with a look at his life in retirement, with the Halderman Barn Museum central to his ongoing love of Mustang, the car that gave him the opportunity to "strut his stuff". The book is also replete with a fascinating collection of photos illustrating the design and evolution of the Mustang and much more of Halderman's creative designing.
This is an amazing book on the birth of the Ford Mustang. It contains 12 chapters of very well-researched material from the beginning of it's creation. It contains many color pictures throughout the book showing the car interiors, exteriors, and close ups of the engines. Some pics og the cars being made on the assembly lines and has some vintage black & white pics too.It includes charts showing paint color codes for 1964 1/2- 1966, engine codes for 1965 & 1966, 1st-4th Generation Mustangs just to name a few.It gives detailed description of concept cars and other types of Mustangs that I was not familiar with. There is also a chapter dedicated to the Halderman Barn Museum. This was a well-researched and well-written book with outstanding photos.A must-have for anyone who loves Mustangs and would like to read more on how they came to be.
Mustang by Design: Gale Halderman and the creation of Ford's Iconic Pony Car inside Ford's design, development & Production of the First Mustang by Jimmy Find more and James Halderman,Cartech books. This book is a must for The Mustang aficionado and the Ford Faithful. In-depth,well written and researched coming from an different angle from the usual that most of us thought we knew.great period photography, interviews as well as a look at some other Ford car,Lincoln and Mercury designs by Gale Halderman.A great addition to one's collection reserved for such great books.
This is the quintessential Mustang design book, following the career of Gale Halderman and his influence in the design of the first Mustang. This is very comprehensively written with plenty of photographs with tons of references. There are many design sketches and photos of build prototypes leading to the first Mustang design - some I've heard about and others not (but then again I'm no Mustang expert - I'm sure many of you will that are will still like having the references in a single volume). The book, besides being well written, has higher print quality, especially of the images, than you'll find in many of the paperbacks on the market. Speaking of paperbacks, this hardcover has a real sewn binding and a dust-jacket that reprints the graphic cover. I wish more books like this were published, but it seems print has for the most part gone to the wayside - I'm glad that CarTech has picked up the mantel that has been abandoned by most publishers.Full disclosure, this book was provided to me as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.
As an original owner of a 1969 Candy Apple Red Mach 1, I jumped at the chance to read the recently released book, “Mustang by Design – Gale Halderman and the Creation of Ford’s Iconic Pony Car." This 175-page book, with loads of historical photographs, is co-authored by two accomplished automobile journalists, James Dinsmore and James Halderman, who is a cousin to Gale Halderman. It is an informative and engaging read, particularly for anyone interested in the “Mustang Invasion.†It also gives a peek inside the workings of a major car company, including Gale’s interactions with many of the top brass at Ford, including the “Deuce†himself, Henry Ford II. This is not secondhand information, but directly from a guy to who was in the center of it all when it happened.
